About this Painting

You can’t do a series on the Lyttelton Bay area without doing one of Otorimiro – Governor’s Bay. I can see a bit of this community from my bedroom window. Every day, I wake up to the sleeping giants – a line up of hills that look like sleepy old men lying on their backs – so I knew they had to be included.

But the giants were all looking away from the town, weren’t they? But then I looked closer, and there she was, right where I knew she had to be. The guardian mother at rest with a protective arm reaching over Otoromiro.
